6/24/2023 0 Comments Great Expectations by Kathy Acker![]() Janis Joplin was probably the only other woman worth saying you had sex with. ![]() And Richard is prominent in the short annals of men who have written about having sex with a famous woman (Kathy) as opposed to women always covering them. Richard Hell too “left poetry” to invent punk rock. Patti Smith was kind of one of them, leaving poetry for rock n roll but still saying she was a poet. Lydia Davis is one, Renee Gladman is another right now. You know and we’ve always had fellow travelers, people who move with us as opposed to the sellout fiction world, weird experimental artists and writers. And it made a baggy loose space, a trans form where poets could meet everybody. Bernadette Mayer was the poet who coined the “writer” term at that time. Kathy was doing what people in the poetry world then called “writing.” Meaning they refused genre, they didn’t not write poems they just didn’t like calling them anything that specific. This poet Mike Sappol who was also in a band said Kathy aka the Black Tarantula is who I should be reading I don’t know I just think you’d like her. ![]() I first heard about Kathy in a workshop at St. I’ve already written two versions of this intro and now I think I’m just giving up and I’ll talk to you direct. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments Nevernight book 3![]() The Nevernight Chronicle, in a way, is Mia’s revenge story told by an unnamed narrator that the reader didn’t know, not until they’ve read Darkdawn anyway. ![]() Now, the specifics leading towards it, and whether Mia’s death is a lie or truth, I’ll leave that for you to find out for yourself. We know the power of words.”Įach installment within the series can be classified as Mia’s journey throughout her life Nevernight as Mia’s book of birth, Godsgrave as Mia’s book of life, and Darkdawn as Mia’s book death. O’gentlefriends, Darkdawn concluded The Nevernight Chronicle trilogy on a bloody high note, and it’s not implausible for me to say that this has become my favorite book in the series. If we go with a strictly traditional point of view, then Clym is probably the official protagonist – he is the hero who ties all the other characters together and whose story drives the narrative. And even when they are arguing with each other, we kind of want them both to win somehow. We sympathize with both and root for both. So we'd like to propose that both of these characters are protagonists. And while Clym is largely absent from the start of the story, making it more Eustacia's, Eustacia is dead and gone by the end of the story, making it more Clym's. Clym has the shout-out in the title going for him (he's the "native"), but Eustacia kicks-off the novel for us. Why two protagonists here? Well, it's all part of the trickiness of a love story that places the two participants on fairly equal footing in terms of the narrative – which one do you side with? In this story, we'd really say that it's a matter of perspective. I really started this one thinking I’d be writing a review about how mild and cerebral the whole thing was–because that’s very much how both Constantine and Nora initially present themselves–but I was FOOLED. Overall: I was SO CLOSE to writing this one off and then I hit 50% of the way through it and hooooo buddy…Sophie Jordan just lit the whole thing on fire. Desperate to right herself in his eyes and save her reputation, she pushes Constantine to allow her to help him, and then they get all hot and bothered and so will you. Langley’s help only to find out about Nora’s deceit. The soon-to-be Duke of Birchwood seeks Dr. Plot: Nora trained extensively under the tutelage of her now-deceased physician father and has become a talented healer who corresponds with those in need of help under her father’s name in secret. Heat Factor: It didn’t get cracking until about 50% of the way through the book and then it was just nothing to inferno in about one chapter.Ĭharacter Chemistry: They’re both a bit straight-laced but with this undercurrent of rebelliousness and it works. ![]() |
